Dog Beaches & Swimming Lakes

The Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park is a lake-rich region. Dogs are often not permitted at supervised bathing beaches during the main season. Natural shore sections may be accessible depending on local signs. Please check leash rules, bathing permissions and seasonal restrictions on site.

Einhaus is located on the western shore of Lake Ratzeburg. The natural Himmelswiese bathing area is nearby. Please check the current local signs to see whether and under what conditions dogs may enter the water. Be considerate of other visitors and keep dogs on a leash in protected areas.

Lake Ratzeburg (approx. 10 minutes away) offers many small, hidden coves, especially on its wooded eastern shore between Ratzeburg and the nature reserve. These natural shore sections are ideal for a quick cool-down during a long hike. The water here is mostly calm and crystal clear. Since these are not official dog beaches, mutual consideration for other bathers and water sports enthusiasts is essential.

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle, we recommend trips to Lake Mechow, Lake Lütau near Mölln, or the idyllic Lake Pipersee. Lake Pinnsee, a mysterious forest lake very close by, is another insider tip: After a short walk through the shady forest, you will reach small shore access points where your dog can jump into the water for a bit. There is no infrastructure at these natural lakes, but there is absolute peace and untouched nature.

To ensure that swimming remains a relaxed experience for everyone, a few simple rules apply: Always take enough dog waste bags with you and leave the beach clean. Dogs are often allowed to run free at official dog beaches, but a leash requirement usually applies down to the water at normal natural bathing spots and in nature reserves. Make sure your dog does not disturb other bathers or wildlife (such as breeding waterfowl). Consideration ensures that dogs remain welcome guests in the region.

For a perfect day at the beach, you should remember the following: Sufficient drinking water and a travel bowl (lake water in moderation is usually okay, but fresh water is better), floating toys (such as a dummy or special water balls), one or two highly absorbent dog towels or a dog bathrobe for the ride back, and a long line just in case their recall isn't working perfectly in the heat of the moment. A first aid kit for small cuts from shells or stones also doesn't hurt.

The main swimming season for dogs is from May to September. In the peak summer months of July and August, water temperatures in the shallower lakes can reach a pleasant 20-23 degrees Celsius – ideal for extensive splashing. In the off-season (October to April), the beaches are emptier, and the rules are relaxed at many lakes where dogs are banned in summer. At low temperatures in winter, make sure your dog doesn't catch a cold after swimming and always keep them moving.

Should your four-legged friend injure themselves while playing, you are well covered around Brunsmark and Mölln. Several renowned veterinary practices in Mölln (only a 10-minute drive away) are available for emergencies. Some practices also offer emergency veterinary services on weekends. This way, you can enjoy your holiday by the water with the reassuring feeling that help is available quickly in an emergency.
